Chunky Granny Square Blanket

About this pattern
This chunky granny square blanket is the perfect first crochet project. Each individual square is small enough to carry anywhere, which means you can make progress on the go. The bulky yarn and large hook make everything work up fast, and the traditional granny square construction means there is no complicated shaping or counting to worry about.
This pattern makes a blanket using 30 squares arranged in a 5 x 6 grid. You can easily adjust the size by making more or fewer squares.

Making one granny square
Make 30 squares total. Each square measures approximately 24 x 24 cm. Mix colours or keep them the same β both look beautiful.
Round
Instructions
Stitch count
Rnd 1
Make a magic ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc into ring, ch 2. *3 dc into ring, ch 2.* Rep 3 more times. Sl st to top of ch-3 to join.
12 dc + 4 ch-2 spaces
Rnd 2
Sl st to ch-2 sp. Ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, ch 1. *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner sp, ch 1.* Rep 3 times. 3 dc in first sp, ch 2. Sl st to join.
24 dc + 4 corners
Rnd 3
Sl st to corner sp. Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp. *Ch 1, 3 dc in ch-1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner.* Rep 3 times. Sl st to join.
36 dc + 4 corners
Rnd 4
Sl st to corner sp. Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp. *[Ch 1, 3 dc in sp] twice, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner.* Rep 3 times. Sl st to join. Fasten off.
48 dc + 4 corners
Joining the squares
Arrange your 30 squares in a 5 x 6 grid. Join using the flat slip stitch join method:
Hold two squares with wrong sides together
Insert hook through both corner ch-2 spaces
Join with a slip stitch, working through both layers across the edge
Fasten off and weave in ends
Repeat until all squares are joined into rows, then join the rows together
Border
Join yarn to any corner ch-2 space
Round 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around all edges, working 3 sc into each corner. Sl st to join.
Round 2: Ch 3, dc evenly around, working (dc, ch 2, dc) in each corner. Sl st to join. Fasten off.
Finishing
Weave in all ends with a tapestry needle β go in two directions for security. Hand wash in cool water, then lay flat to dry. This evens out tension differences and gives a polished professional finish.
π¨ Colour ideas
Try a neutral main colour (cream, oat, grey) with 2β3 accent shades. Alternating warm and cool tones in each square gives a curated, intentional look without needing to plan too carefully.

Ribbed Winter Scarf
The perfect first knitting project. Ribbing looks impressive but only uses knit and purl stitches β making this a brilliant way to practice both while creating something you will actually wear all winter.

About this pattern
This classic ribbed scarf is one of the best projects for a brand new knitter. You only need to know two stitches β knit and purl β and the 2x2 ribbing pattern is easy enough to memorise within the first few rows. The result is a thick, squishy, stretchy scarf that looks like it took far more skill than it did.
Because ribbing is the same on both sides, there is no wrong side to worry about. It also makes a wonderful gift β it suits any gender, any age, any style.
π‘ Knotlio Tip
New to knitting? Watch our free "Cast On and Knit" tutorial first. It covers the long-tail cast-on and both the knit and purl stitch so you will be ready to start this pattern straight away.
Materials
Yarn: Worsted weight (#4) yarn β approx. 150g / 300m. Wool is warmest, acrylic is easiest to wash, a wool-acrylic blend is the best of both worlds
Needles: 5mm (US 8) straight or circular needles, at least 30cm long
Notions: Scissors, tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge
20 sts x 26 rows = 10cm in 2x2 rib (slightly stretched). Gauge is not critical for a scarf β a looser gauge gives a wider, squishier scarf; tighter gives a narrower, denser one. Both are lovely.

Pattern instructions
Cast on: Using the long-tail cast-on, CO 40 stitches. For a narrower scarf use 32 sts, for wider use 48 sts. Always use a multiple of 4.
Row
Instructions
Notes
Setup Row
*K2, P2* β repeat across all 40 sts
Establishes the 2x2 rib pattern
Every row after
*K2, P2* β repeat across all 40 sts
Yes, every single row is identical!
Continue until
Scarf measures 160cm (63 inches) from cast-on edge
Approximately 420 rows β goes faster than you think
Bind off
BO all sts loosely in pattern (knit the knits, purl the purls)
Binding off in pattern keeps the edge stretchy
π How to check your length
Lay the scarf flat without stretching and measure from cast-on edge to your needles. 160cm gives a great single wrap with tails to hang. Go to 200cm for a cosy double wrap style.
Finishing
Cut yarn leaving a 20cm tail
Thread the tail onto your tapestry needle and weave it in along the edge in two directions for security
Do the same with your cast-on tail
Wet-block your scarf: soak in cool water for 10 minutes, gently squeeze out excess water (do not wring), then lay flat to dry
Variations to try next
Striped version: Switch colours every 10 rows for an easy striped effect
1x1 rib: *K1, P1* for a finer, more elastic fabric
Wider wrap: Cast on 60 sts for a scarf that doubles as a wrap
Headband: Stop at 50cm and sew the ends together for a cosy ribbed headband
